Bowing to the wishes of his wife to go on a wedding trip across Africa, this experienced big game hunter later regretted exposing her to dangers from wild beasts, waterless bush country and two white men, an outlaw and a madman. The newlyweds traveled by canoe down the Kunango and Kubango rivers in Angola, hunting lion, hippopotamus and lechwe, with rhinoceros and other antelope bagged on the Loengi River. Near the Kwando River, the author stalked buffalo by night (!). The Stathams eventually reached the Zambesi, but there is little description of their journey to the east coast. There are also 90 pages of appendices noting the native tribes, river systems and wild game of the region. Original olive cloth with gilt titles and canoeing vignette on upper board, gilt titles and hunter on spine a little dulled but still legible. Original endpapers, front firm and tight, rear inner hinge just starting. Well illustrated with full page plates. Foxing and toning to page extremities and front matter.
