Green cloth over beveled boards, gilt lettering on the spine and front cover. Slight scuffing and wear to the boards. Slight foxing on outermost leaves and some age tanning. Penned inscription from original owner and his Family crest book plate on the inside front cover.
Major Farrar sailed to South Africa on the Doone Castle and joined the Battalion commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Bowles. This formed part of the fifth division commanded by General Warren. Later the regiment was transferred to Colesberg under General French. The regiment marched under lord Roberts and was involved in the Paardeberg battle and also in the occupation of Bloemfontein, Johannesburg and Pretoria. It also followed the retreat of the Boers to the Crocodile Valley. The book records the daily life in the field and accounts of the Mounted Infantry. It includes illustrations and maps of the battles and statistics of the regiments with details of deaths and awards etc. and correspondence pertaining to the Green Howards.
