Informative memoir by the British Resident, who describes the Islands including Pemba, and the impact of Indian, Persian, Chinese, and Arab traders, and the impact of being the centre of the slave trade until the late 19th century. He has included details the various communities, including the large Indian community, the Sultanate, the growth of spices, coconuts, as well as architectural sites around the island.
Maj. F. B. Pearce, who in 1914 became British Resident in Zanzibar (principal administrative officer and His Majesty's representative). The mainland which until 1918 had been German East Africa became a British mandate territory at this time and was renamed Tanganyika.
