In his Journal Harford, who was with Lord Chelmsford's Column, tells of the initial skirmishes of the war and of the disaster at Isandlwana and the defence of Rorke's Drift. He describes the recovery at Fugitive's Drift of the Queen's Colour of the 1st Battalion, 24th Regiment, claimimg that he was personally responsible for finding the standard. Later on resuming the Adjutancy of his own regiment, the 99th, he took part in the hunt for the Zulu king, Cetshwayo, after the battle of Ulundi. He writes of Cetshwayo's capture and detention, and tells how he came to know the exile well when he was stationed at Cape Town in 1881.
