First edition published by the Committee of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in 1948.
126pp. Illustrated with black and white photos + portraits of the chairmen of the JSE at rear.
'On the occasion of the Diamond Jubilee of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange my Committee present this history to commemorate the important part played by the Exchange in the story of Johannesburg, the development of the Witwatersrand Goldfields and the rise of South Africa.
During the sixty years which have passed since the Stock Exchange was established on that summer afternoon in the rough mining camp which was early Johannesburg, our Institution has lived through the romantic period of South Africa's political and economic history. We have witnessed the vicissitudes of fortune of the companies and men who have won the precious metal from the greatest goldfield in the world. We have grown up with Johannesburg in its progress from a village on the veld to its present status of The Golden City, the premier City of modern Africa.' - from the Foreword
Copy contains an interesting letter from the secretary of the JSE, in response to a request by a Mr. Lucius Rhind for a copy of this book. He states, "It may be mentioned that the supply of these books is strictly limited, and the Committee, under normal circumstances, are reluctant to present copies to enquirers, but in your case the President has made a special exception."
