Westra (P.E.) Director, South African Library in the Foreword: 'These drawings are of particular importance because they are the earliest realistic depictions of the original inhabitants of the Cape, drawn in situ. and remarkable for their accuracy and liveliness. Extensive research failed to establish the identity of the artist, but it is clear that he drew in the style of the Dutch school of the seventeenth century. On most drawings explanatory notes are given in Dutch, sometimes in up to three hands.'
