Title page + introductory page + 46pp.

A very scarce volume of around 182 pencil portraits of the field artillery men who were involved in the South African campaigns in Egypt and Palestine during WWI.

'In introducing this album of "victims," as Monty called us, I think it hardly necessary to remind you of the artist: the book itself will serve that purpose. He begs me to thank you all for the patience you exercised during your sittings and the self-control you displayed in retaining your normal expressions whilst flies played hide-and-seek over your faces and dust curled round your nostrils.

This book is placed before you as a memento of the days we spent together in the field. Years hence it will rouse pleasant memories and associations as you look on these then dimly-familiar faces and think of the varied experiences we went through in Palestine and Egypt.' - Introduction
