Chronicles Selous' life as a professional elephant hunter during the years 1871 to 1880. Contains detailed information of the fauna of the region, as well as plates depicting the head & horns of various antelope. In the preface Selous states that it is nearly 20 years since the publication of Baldwin's book on African hunting (AFRICAN HUNTING AND ADVENTURE FROM NATAL TO THE ZAMBESI, 1860), and there has been no book since "... that can be considered in any way as a guide for men about to visit the interior of South Africa in search of sport." He sets out to provide such a work. See Mendelssohn vol. 2, p. 300, on the original.
