Cameron was dispatched by the Royal Geographical Society to come to the aid of Livingstone. However, the expedition proved too late and met up with the explorer's entourage bearing his body. Cameron decided to press on; he retrieved Livingstone's papers at Ujiji, explored Lake Tanganyika further and then endeavoured to trace the connection to the Congo River (in which he failed) but continued westwards to become the first European to cross the continent.
