Early twentieth century half calf binding with five raised bands on the spine. Red top edge. Gift inscription on verso of front endpaper indicates that this copy was bound at Paris, Xmas 1922.
Two former owner's bookplates, one being that of Sir John Fischer-Williams (1870-1947) who was an international lawyer and British legal adviser to the Reparation Commission.
Binding tight. Apart from minimal contemporary marginalia the book remains clean internally. A pencil note on the verso of the front endpaper was left, presumably by the binders, indicating that folio 141 is a little defective at top and that this copy lacks folio 147.
The Rhetoric for Herennius, formerly attributed to Cicero but in fact of unknown authorship, is the oldest surviving Latin book on rhetoric, dating from the late 80s BC.
