First Edition: 143 pages of text + 131 illustrations, brown cloth gilt, a very good copy in lightly worn dust jacket - A.A. Balkema's jackets from the 1950’s and 60’s were not varnished or laminated and seldom survive in fine condition.
Contains over 100 black-and-white plates from photographs by Arthur Elliott and others. These photographs are of historical value as they show the condition of Anreith’s work in the mid-20th century before more recent weathering or questionable restorations. This was the first comprehensive study to treat Anreith as a major European artist working in a colonial context. It remains the primary reference for anyone researching the Baroque and Neoclassical influences on South African colonial art.
