'This book is an endeavour to present the reader with a description of the different manifestations of art in Namibia, both in time and in space. In time, because it also includes prehistoric art, such as paintings and engravings found in the Brandberg, at Twyfelfontein, and other places. In space, because some manifestations of art, above all indigenous art and crafts, depend very much on the bond between the artist and his or her ethnic or regional affiliation.

The idea of art was rather restrictive up to the 19th century. Only what was created according to the classical and antique rules was considered art.

The turn of the century brought along new ideas and trends in the sphere of arts. Today's painters have inherited from the 19th century not only a clear wish for originality but also a latent subversion against the rules and subjects of classical art.

Leaving aside the polemics on whether or not today's art has been built with elements which contradict the principles of classical art, what is true is that the concept of art is today much wider and more free than it was a century ago. That is why Ms Lilienthal includes in her book not only realistic and figurative art, but also prehistoric art, traditional and rural art, and what she calls 'new trends'.

This book is something that Namibia has lacked. It is a 'Who is Who' in the world of art, but it is also a brief history of Namibian art. I am sure that it is going to be extremely useful, not only for teachers and students wanting to know about their country, but also for any person, be they Namibian or foreign, who wishes to obtain an insight into Namibian culture.' - Spanish Ambassador to Namibia
