Mr. Wilson was practically the first Gold Commissioner in the Transvaal. He threw open the township of Baberton in February 1884, and was, he states, for seventeen years in close relationship with inner Pretoria, and consequently in a position to gain a fair insight into the methods of the officials of the country.
An intriguing book exploring, in nineteen chapters, the psychology of the Transvaal Boer, and 'Colonial ignorance of the Transvaal in its early days'. Many chapters dealing with the early mining claims on the Rand reefs; as well as notes on the 1884 convention, diggings in the Cape (De Kaap goldfields) and Transvaal. Notes and observations on Kruger himself and many of the gold and diamond mining activities in Cape and Transvaal. (Mendelssohn volume 2 page 624)
