Barkley was a civil engineer hired to build a railway connecting the Danube River to Kostendje, a port on the Black Sea coast. He describes the difficulties he encountered in this wild and unsettled region, with descriptions of the terrain, the people he met, the building of the rail line, and even some hunting adventures. Original plum cloth with black foliate borders, gilt spine titles, spine a bit sunned. Map frontispiece. 313 pages + 32 page book catalog at rear. First title page present. Original chocolate endpapers, rear firm and tight, front with just a hint of cracking. Text block clean and tight.
