When this catalogue was started it was intended to be a catalogue of all the loose prints in the Africana Museum other than those reproduced by photographic processes. It soon became evident that most of the prints in the Museum were from books. It was therefore decided to catalogue all prints in Africana books in the Johannesburg Public Library in the first place and to treat the Museum's prints from these books as additional copies. To restrict the size of the work it was decided to introduce the end date of 1870, because in the last quarter of the century reproduction of illustrations by photographic means was being increasingly used. It was also considered that botanical books and prints should be omitted, as it is intended at a later date to produce a separate catalogue of botanical prints, in which the Library and Museum are rich. Botanical prints appearing in the works of travellers, such as Burchell and Tachard, are included. Zoological books dealing entirely with South African animals are included, but general zoological works were not searched for South African animals. This catalogue therefore includes entries for all illustrations, other than photographs, in Africana books in the Johannesburg Public Library published before 1870, excеpting botanical works, and all loose prints in the Africana Museum published before 1870, excepting botanical prints from botanical books.
