Frank Brownlee's short stories and sketches of South African life are well known and admirers of his work will welcome this volume of tales of native life in the Transkei territory.

Wanzi was a corporal of the native police and the five men of his squad only saved themselves from dismissal by recounting their past deeds of valour which have earned them a place in the force. Their stories are amusing, varied, and very characteristic.

The last of the stories belongs to the Kalahari Desert; it is recounted by an old Bushman chief, and is especially interesting as giving a history of his people under German and British Rule
