The first years of Tydskrif vir Letterkunde (1951–1952) grew out of the older Afrikaans literary tradition linked to the Afrikaanse Skrywerskring, and it inherited a strong concern with preserving, evaluating, and promoting Afrikaans writing. Under C. M. van den Heever as editor and Prof Abel Coetzee as administrator, it changed from an annual literary yearbook into a quarterly journal, becoming a more regular forum for poetry, essays, criticism, and literary debate. Literary advisors for the publication are listed as DF Malherbe, HA Fagen, PC Schoonees, FJ Eybers and WA de Klerk.

Early issues featured major figures such as Elisabeth Eybers, Ernst van Heerden, D. F. Malherbe, Nicolaas Petrus van Wyk Louw, Uys Krige, and André Demedts.

Overall, the journal carried forward its heritage while taking on a more active role in Afrikaans literary life.

Compared with Standpunte, Tydskrif vir Letterkunde was more tied to the established literary institution, while Standpunte was the more independent and openly critical forum associated with the NP van Wyk Louw circle. Writers associated with that circle or influenced by Louw included W. E. G. Louw, Sheila Cussons, Elisabeth Eybers, Uys Krige, and D. J. Opperman.
