Ubac (1910 – 1985) was a painter, sculptor, photographer and engraver. He cut, engraved, and polished the rough surfaces of slate to reveal smooth, matte, velvety black planes juxtaposed with raw, textured fractures. His motifs often included archaic, human-like torsos (trois torsos), geometric rhythms, and fossil-like impressions.
