'Dinter arrived in Swakopmund in June 1897 and immediately began his collecting activities which were to continue throughout his life. It is estimated that he covered more that 40,000 kilometres, on foot, by ox-wagon and by motor truck in the course of his expeditions; his collecting numbers extend to over 8,400 in addition to quantities of living plants and seeds which were not all numbered.'
