These two volumes dealing with Sub-Saharan Africa provide a systematic survey of creative writings generated in the three main European languages that were used for imaginative purposes on the African continent. Mainly references English, French, & Portuguese writings, but many other languages are included (even Latin). The work is organised to a taxonomy that takes into account time, space, and language with a comprehensive system of periodisation applied to the fast-growing corpus of literature produced from Dakar to Dar es Salaam and from the Sahara to the Cape of Good Hope. since independence.
