[John MOIR]
Female Tuition; or, an address to mothers, on the education of daughters. The second edition.
London: printed for J. Murray, 1786.
Small octavo. Pp. vi,[2],268,[4], including a half-title at the front and 4pp. of Murray's advertisements at the rear.
Condition of contents: some toning and spotting, but generally clean.
Bound using contemporary materials: leather-backed Chinese floral patterned-cloth covered boards, spine gilt with red morocco spine label
Condition of binding: some soiling and rubbing, but still attractive (see images).
Provenance: Thomas Loudon (armorial bookplate and two inscriptions, one dated 1792).
A good subject and rare on the market - none for sale, none sold at auction, one copy offered by the Trade in 1982 for $75.00 (when it was described as 'scarce'). The first edition appeared in 1784 and proved popular, the author notes at the end of the preface that "This second edition has undergone some material alterations, and the author is happy to conclude, from the rapid sale of the first [edition], that his labour has not been thrown away" (p.vi). There seem to have been at least two subsequent editions. ESTC T78345
