First edition: 114 + 138 pages, original dark blue cloth over bevelled boards, starting to wear at the front hinge, titled gilt on the upper cover and spine, folding map, 2 folding diagrammatic charts of the troops which occupied Bloemfontein on 13th March 1900, long fold-out section of the Blockhouse line from Hanover Road to Andriesfontein, a very good copy.
Hackett (R.G.) South African War Books, An Illustrated Bibliography. Hackett summarises the two parts as follows: 'The first section (114 pages) has the title page common to both parts. The record of the 2nd Batt. is compiled by Brigadier-Gen. F. Lloyd. The 2nd Grenadier Guards formed part of General Rundle's 8th Division. They arrived in the Orange Free State late in April 1900 and continued operating in this are until the end of the campaign....The second section (138 pages), dealing with the 3rd Batt., is compiled by Brevet-Major Hon. A. Russell.
The 3rd Grenadier Guards formed part of the Guards' Brigade under Gen. Colville. They advanced with Lord Methuen's force from Orange River Bridge in Nov. 1900, taking part in operations at Belmont, Modder River and Magersfontein. Thereafter the 3rd marched with Lord Robert's army through the Orange Free State and Transvaal arriving at Komati Poort on the eastern border by late Sept. 1900. In Nov. of that year the Grenadiers were brought down to Cape Colony to guard drifts on the Orange River. To this end they were employed in the Colony suppressing Boer insurgency. Casualty lists, a campaign itinerary, nominal rolls and other statistics are included.'
