Sekoto (1913-1993) was born at Botshabelo in Mpumalanga. After graduating from the Diocesan Teachers Training College in Polokwane, Sekoto taught for a while. He moved to Sofiatown in 1938, and to District Six in 1942, where he lived with the Mahud family. After a short period in Pretoria, he went into exile in Paris, where he earned a living as a night club entertainer. He was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of the Witwatersrand and saw many of his works displayed in local galleries before his death in Paris. His paintings of Sophiatown, District Six, and Eastwood, Pretoria are considered historical records of South Africa in the 1930s and 1940s.
