THE HISTORIC BUILDING OF HARARE (1890-1940)
A somewhat extensive catalogue of Historic Buildings in Harare (Salisbury).
From the Introduction:
The architecture of a period reflects its history and its culture. It is not merely preserved in libraries or galleries, but it is all around us. It does not lie fossilized in a museum but is lived in, worked in, and perceived by all who use it. Architecture is full of meaning and will be seen and interpreted differently by each of us.
The history of early colonial architecture illustrates the increasing account of power and resources of the settler population. The settlers arrived with an alien culture and foreign ideals which determined the forms of the new buildings and towns. Response to geography and climate modified those forms to fit better the local conditions.
This book begins with a brief historical review off the growth of the early towns, before proceeding to describe the styles and trends which are apparent in the architecture.
