Jr.) The Cleveland Herbal, Botanical, and Horticultural Collections, (1992) numbers 345 & 358: 'Boerhaave was a Dutch physician, a student of philosophy and theology, professor of botany, medicine, and chemistry at the University of Leyden (for much of his career occupying three of its five chairs simultaneously), and director of the botanical gardens.
'This is the first edition of his second catalogue of plants in the University botanical garden which includes 2000 species added under his supervision since his first catalogue of 1710.
'Pritzel and Stafleu identify this as the second issue of the first edition with cancel title pages.'
Hunt: Catalogue of Botanical Books, II. part I. pp. liv-lv, (1961) and Gunn & Codd: Botanical Exploration of Southern Africa (1991), pages 41/3: The plates depict newly discovered species, including 24 proteas. These were based on paintings Boerhaave had obtained from Jan Hartog, superintendent of the Company's garden at the Cape.
