Google Scholar: Abstract - About 50 expert authors from many countries contributed to this comprehensive and authoritative book on the classification of the insect fauna of southern Africa, especially that part of the continent south of the Cunene and Zambezi Rivers, including Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, South Africa and part of Mozambique. The emphasis is on the identification and biology of the major groups. An introductory section provides an account of the morphology, metamorphosis and higher classification of insects (down to families), together with a key to orders. The 26 orders recognized are then dealt with in turn by different authors. For each order, information is provided on representative taxa in southern Africa, taxonomic characters, biology and classification. Keys, mainly down to families, are provided, and notes on the taxonomy and biology of individual families are included, referring especially to southern Africa. A major feature of this work is the wealth of illustrations of characters of diagnostic importance, as well as representative whole examples of the different taxa.
