The book covers a time period approximately from 1800-1945, with a few exceptions outside these dates. The term "hunter" is defined loosely, by necessity, for just about all the explorers, missionaries, prospectors, and colonists on the so called Dark Continent survived at least in part on the fruits of the chase.
