First Edition: 237 pages, woodcut printer's device on the title page, original black cloth titled gilt along the spine, light staining on the endpapers from moisture in the boards at the time of printing, a very good copy in the dust jacket with a 2 cm tear at the top of the front panel, light wear and dust soiling along the edges - the jacket is printed on thick stock paper and spirit varnished, designed Ronald Clyne, price clipped at the top of the front flap.
The colophon on the final unnumbered page reads, 'Three thousand copies of this book have been printed from Intertype Garamond on white Winnebago Eggshell. The binding cloth is Holliston Black Novelex.'

It was released in 1947 and was the author's first book. The book's title is taken from Macbeth, Act III, scene ii. It was published by Arkham House in an edition of 3,084 copies. Most of the stories originally appeared in the magazines Unknown and Weird Tales. Three were first published in this book. The last two stories showcase Leiber's Sword and Sorcery heroes Fafhrd and The Gray Mouser.
