1880 edition: viii, 56 pages of text + 50 leaves of stiff card with 100 vintage collotype photographs, pictorial title page with portrait of Sir Henry Bartle Edward Frere laid down in centre, original full pictorial brown leather with gilt lettering, a little shelf-rubbed in places, design repeated in blind on the back, minor foxing throughout which does not affect the photographs, all tissue guards of the photographs present but worn. The end papers look more modern. Some damage to the top edge of the spine and along the top and bottom sections of the spine joint.

Scarce 1880 album of photographic scenery of South Africa, with 100 photographs of Cape Town, diamond mines, battle scenes from the zulu war and portraits of tribal peoples.

In the preface, Sam Alexander states that in this volume "I have endeavoured to state facts impartially, and to avoid reference to anything outside the actual sphere of history. I hope the Album will be deemed worthy of a fair amount of success, and that I have been enabled to do something towards making the South African Colonies better known than they are at present"
