'This book gives all the known details about the British settlers who arrived in South Africa up to 1826. The author found that the blind acceptance of the accuracy of previously published lists led to insuperable difficulties, and their obvious lack of reliability led him to build up his own. For eleven years he devoted his full time to research, opening and building an individual record for each settler; the result is this astonishing 'who's who', containing details of more than 2,000 heads of families and individual settlers.

'There are also 550 more detailed biographies of prominent settlers (103 of them with portraits); 270 British settlers who landed before 1820; details of 84 settler parties; movements of 35 ships; and much related information.

'This book is published under the auspices of the 1820 Settler Monument Committee and is a valuable contribution to the history of British emigration to South Africa, and to the knowledge of the forebears of our oldest English-speaking families.'
