Volumes I & II of this vintage collection of early Johannesburg photographs, known as the Barnett Collection, published by The Star, one of Johannesburg's oldest newspapers. The brothers Joseph and David Barnett were pioneering photographers in Johannesburg. Their striking photographs capture everyday life during the early days on the Witwatersrand Gold Fields. In the 1920's younger brother David sold the entire collection of over 2,000 negatives to the Star newspaper.

Introduction and captions by Denis Godfrey, staff member of The Star and author of The Enchanted Door.

VOLUME II: SOUTH AFRICA AND JOHANNESBURG AT THE BEGINNING OF THE 20TH CENTURY

Trade edition.

'The first volume of "The Barnett Collection" is mainly a pictorial history of Johannesburg in 1896-1914, when the Barnetts were professional photographers in Johannesburg. The second volume, too, deals with Johannesburg but includes photographs taken during the Anglo-Boer War and in the other major Southern African towns and cities. It is therefore a unique album of life in this country around the turn of the century.'
