Martin documents the churches established by the first Bishop of Cape Town, Robert Gray. Forty of the fifty churches were designed by Gray's wife, Sophy. They arrived in Cape Town in 1848 to implement a church building programme and to increase the number of Anglican clergy in the British colonies in southern Africa. Martin's historical and architectural commentary is accompanied by his own detailed watercolours and line drawings.
