First Edition: 234 pages + 4 page catalogue for the Lonsdale Library, frontispiece - The head of an elephant, with a diagram of the skull, 37 full-page and other illustrations of spoor and droppings, original brown buckram, frayed the top and bottom of the spine, a good copy.

An Annotated Bibliography of Big Game Hunting Books 1785-1999, (2011), page 174: 'Lyell provides rules for hunting big game, as well as chapters dealing with rifle selection and tracking game. The remainder of the text examines the natural history traits, and methods of hunting, species by species. The illustrations consist of sketches of the spoor of game animals, many being life-sized. An essential work aimed at a generation of new hunters visiting Africa at the time'.
