Editor's note: 'The Jameson Raid is a timely re-examination of a notorious incident which has intrigued, confused and exasperated historians for a century. The roles of, and relationships between, the central characters of Dr Leander Starr Jameson, Cecil John Rhodes, Joseph Chamberlain and Paul Kruger are examined, as well as aspects such as the influence of the Boer-Banananwa war and economic causes in the events leading to the Raid, and the political and economic consequences, which may have contributed to the origins of the South African War. The literature inspired by the Raid, and its historiographical treatment, are considered.
Twelve internationally recognized scholars contribute to an anthology which exhibits a variety of approaches to the causes, personalities and consequences of the Raid.
The rare illustrations include works by the famous war artist Melton Prior, and etchings by Mortimer Menpes, as well as contemporary cartoons, and facsimile reproductions of letters plotting the Raid, written by Rhodes and Jameson.'
