A first edition, first impression of the first volume in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy.
3000 copies of the first edition were published with the first 2,500 being bound by Jarrold & Sons. This copy was bound by Jarrold & Sons.
The publisher's original red cloth binding is worn and split at the hinges. There is a tape ghost along the front inner hinge. Internally the book is clean although there is discolouration to the top corners of the final pages starting from 417-423 as well as on the top corners of the rear endpapers. The map, which was originally tipped in and not bound in, is absent.
A good candidate for rebinding.
