'With the tremendous upsurge of interest displayed over recent years in our Fauna, the need for a comprehensive book on our Mammals to supplement those already available on Birds, Fishes, etc., has become a matter of urgency. It will thus be a source of considerable gratification to all lovers of the Veld and its Wild Life to know that such information has now been made available in one volume.

Supplemented with beautiful colour plates, illustrating well over two hundred different kinds of Mammals, this book cannot fail to find a place in every nature-lover's home and should further a more active and widespread interest in our Mammals, without which the future of our great heritage of Wild Life may be jeopardized.

It is sad that the author himself did not live to see the full realization of his work, but in this book he left behind a living memorial of his outstanding labours as a scientist, field-man and conservationist, ranking among the greatest that South Africa has produced.' - editor's note
