Sparks (1933-2016) worked for all his life as a journalist, initially in Queenstown where he was born and raised and then in Rhodesia and in East London under Donald Woods at the Daily Dispatch. He became editor of the Sunday Express and then of the Rand Daily Mail where he proved an articulate defender of the freedom of journalists to report and broke a number of important exposes of the apartheid state.
He wrote a trilogy of well received books covering the history and development of South Africa and the period of transition from apartheid to a democratic South Africa. This was the first book of that trilogy. In later years he wrote for the Washington Post, the Observer and Handelsblad in the Netherlands.
