"This fourth edition is intended to reflect as accurately as possible the position regarding the mineral resources of the Union and includes statistics covering the period from 1939 to 1956 inclusive. As it is issued as the first of a series of handbooks on the geology of the Union, it is, however, not merely a revised and expanded version of its predecessor, but differs radically from it in respect of both scope and presentation. Thus, the statistical graphs have been omitted and tables have been inserted instead. Also, in view of the much greater length of the volume, the chapters on the physical features and the geology of the Union have been omitted and several new chapters, besides a table of geological formations and geological and mineral maps of the Union, which are entirely new features, have been added."
