'12 years have passed since Dr Wittmann of Munich brought Friedemann Books and Stamps and Postmarks of German Colonies up to date and a lot of changes have since taken place.

By kind permission of Dr Wittmann this translation of his book on German South West Africa (plus the general Introduction to all Colonies) fills a long overdue need to publish an authoritative work on German South West Africa in the English language. But even for the German speaking collectors, this book is of great importance as all valuations have been completely revised, new information has been added and 75 photo plates of rarer and interesting postmarks on covers plus some early photos of the territory in German times have been added which together with 197 pages of text make this an important contribution to the serious philatelist of German South West Africa. Not only stamps and postmarks, but also the Postal History, including Forerunners, Military Campaigns, Ships' Mail, Railway Post, Naval Mail, etc., have been included.' - editor's note
