Publishers Note accompanying the book:
During the winter of 1934-35 the family of Flight Lieutenant R.G. Sims was brought unexpected together with national hero T.E. Lawrence, who was serving in the RAF shortly before leaving to join private life; it was to be Lawrence's last winter however, as he was killed on his motorbike only a few months later.
Reggie Sims was an unassuming family man of simple pleasures; he developed a close friendship with the reclusive Lawrence, collecting stories told by Lawrence and anecdotes about his exploits. Sims wrote these down in 1936; more recollections were added in the 1960's, and the whole group was printed in a copy-shop edition of very copies in 1973...
Reggie Sims was a good amateur photographer and persuaded Lawrence to sit for him in the family's home. The six rich, dark, thoughtful poses of a national hero are intimate and memorable... They are the last portraits taken of Lawrence, and as such, have added poignancy.
