First Edition: (viii), 199 pages, frontispiece and 25 plates, original blue cloth with a gilt vignettes of the Dunottar Castle (the ship in which Rothschild travelled to Cape Town) on the upper cover gilt and of ostriches on the back, gilt titling on the spine, tissue guard of the frontispiece foxed, otherwise a very good copy with a presentation inscription on the front free endpaper from the author, 'With the Authors compliments to Essie Wertheimer' daughter of art dealer Asher Wertheimer who worked with the Rothschild family.
The first issue contained a passage on page 159 in which Rothschild impugned the prime minister of the Cape Colony, Sir Thomas Upington who threatened legal action and the book was withdrawn from publication and a second issue printed with minor changes resulting in it being one page shorter than the first issue.
A South Africa Bibliography, volume 4, page 88, 'The State Library has a pencilled note on the fly-leaf: "N.W. Perth (?). Baron Ferdinand gave this book to me when published. He came to me a few weeks later & told me not to let the book out of my hands as it contained a libel (he told where & on whom) & said we have to reprint the book."
