Tobias (1925-2012), after studying at the Universities of Witswatersrand and Cambridge amongst others, succeeded Professor Raymond Dart as Head of the Department of Anatomy and Human Biology at Wits. He studied early civilization across Southern Africa, identified a new species, Homo Habilis, focused on the Sterkfontein cave system, was nominated for a Nobel Prize, received many honorary degrees, and published extensively on his areas of interest and expertise.
