'This book, telling as it does the true story of the Nkwaleni Valley over a period of 179 years, will fill an important gap left in the recorded history of Zululand.

Such names as Isandhlwana, Ulundi and so many other famous place names made familiar the world over by the battles fought between the flower of Britain's military regiments and the savage discipline of Zulu impis.

The northern side of the Nkwaleni Valley is dominated by the Nkwenkwe mountain in which, legend has it, resides "UMNINGI", the six-headed serpent. On the southern side overlooking the Valley are the sites of two great military kraals. The first, and by far the best known is King Shaka's KWABULAWAYO after which Bulawayo in Rhodesia is named. The second is ONDINI which was Cetshwayo's royal kraal during the reign of King Mpande when Cetshwayo rightly considered himself to be the crown prince - later, when he became King he moved to ULUNDI on the northern banks of the White Umfolozi.'
