From the Preface by Keith H. Cooper, Director: Conservation Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa: 'hile this book will be of particular interest to botanists it will also be welcomed by horticulturists and home gardeners in KwaZulu Natal. More and more people are turning to the cultivation of indigenous trees, shrubs and flowers and this is to be encouraged at every opportunity. Books like this do so much to foster and promote a love and understanding of our natural wealth of flora. Few people are aware that the majority of Zulus still use traditional medicines to treat their ailments. This natural "muti" comes mainly from indigenous plants still growing in the wild. With the increasing demand for this resource, many of our indigenous plants are becoming threatened with extinction. We will soon have to start cultivating these plants in nurseries and gardens to take the pressure off the wild stocks. This is just one of many reasons why we need an understanding of the identity, value and uses of our natural flora and fauna.
Joan's book makes a valuable contribution to this end. I hope it will also promote a wider appreciation of the great variety and beauty of our indigenous flowers and the need for their conservation.'
