The Best Naturalists of art in my generation have no formal scientific training. They are artists. Indeed, they are so strikingly knowledgeable about nature, and wildlife in particular, that I happily reverse the statement: many of the best artists of my generation are naturalists. I refer to a small group strongly connected with Africa whose creativity encompasses painting, sculpting and photography. Its members include Kingdon, Root, Plage, Glen and Wolfgang Weber.

By synthesising the aesthetic impact gorillas, dolphins, tigers, dormice, sunbirds and other life have on us, the artist presents the most honest of all cases for conservation.

Forget the flummery in vogue- heritage, economics, species' diversity, environmental quality etcetera ad nauseam. That such life exists is reason enough to keep it. Wolfgang Weber's paintings go a long way in stating this point.

Wolfgang is reticent in making his work public and consequently is not as well known outside his native Germany as he should be. It is very gratifying that he has produced this volume which, I am sure, will widen the recognition he deserves and, and the same time, give many people great pleasure.
