'One hundred years after the discovery of gold on the Ridge of White Waters, protruding from the lofty Highveld plateau of the Southern Transvaal, the world's greatest gold mining industry is still thriving.
Even the most optimistic have underrated the vast quantities of gold concentrated in the enigmatic quartz pebble conglomerate reefs of the Witwatersrand Basin, a relatively small sedimentary depository which has already produced over forty thousand tons of the precious metal. From numerous small claim workings to amalgamations leading to larger mines and ultimately to the new generation of mega-mines, the industry now employs over half a million people and processes more than one hundred million tons of ore each year.
The Council of the Geological Society of South Africa saw fit, in the early 1980's, to request Dr Antrobus to compile and edit a special publication on the Witwatersrand story, its appearance to coincide with the centenary year of the discovery of the Main Reef in 1886 on the farm Langlaagte by Harrison.
Geologists and mining men today have the advantage of a vast store of knowledge accumulated by generations of their colleagues before them and "Witwatersrand Gold - 100 Years" is a warm tribute to the magnificent efforts of our predecessors.' - from the Foreword
