298 pages: illustrations, portraits, maps (some folding & some colour), diagrams (some folding). Quarto. Skivertex with gilding, dust wrapper. Accompanied by a loose-leaf sheet on a Gold Fields of South Africa letterhead explaining the reason for the publication and noting the 'limited allocation' of copies.

Number 395 of a limited edition.

When he discovered a reef on the farm Langlaagte in 1886, George Harrison did not realise just how fabulously rich that reef would prove to be. He and his fellow prospectors also did not realise how far and wide the Witwatersrand reef would stretch. In the years that followed the Klerksdorp area, Orange Free State, Evander, East Rand and South Rand Goldfields would all be opened up and South Africa's history was altered forever. Village Deep, City Deep, Randfontein Estates, Western Areas, Vaal Reefs, Hartebeesfontein, Stilfontein, Zandpan, Buffelsfontein and so many more mines would become household names in South Africa and in stock exchanges across the world!

This work provides a succinct and neatly packaged history of the gold finds and their exploitation. Well illustrated and with superb maps it is one of the most valuable books to appear that provide an overview of gold mining in South Africa, but due to its limited print-run is now seldom seen. An important study.
