The first and only edition of this book, one of only two books written by the artist herself, the other being Congo.
Both are scarce limited editions. This edition of Zanzibar is one of the 350 copies of the regular edition, although not numbered. (There were also 150 de-luxe signed copies).
100 pages, frontispiece, illustrated throughout with black & white photographs of paintings by Irma Stern and accompanying text, some of the illustrations tipped in and in-text monochrome illustrations of Stern's paintings and drawings, in the original grey/beige cloth with a pictorial onlay of a Zanzibar door on the front board.
Condition: A well worn copy. Cover has wear, with scuffing and bumping on the corners as well as some fraying.
Tipped in plate on front cover has some loss in parts (see image 3).
Front free end paper has been removed (image 5), both back end papers intact.
Some damage to the inside front cover (tearing on pasted down end paper). Spine has pulled away slightly from the book internally.
Internally very attractive. All tipped in plates are present, all pages are clean and bright, internal binding is still good, there is no foxing, and it is a good, usable reference copy of a scarce and expensive book.
