South African themed poems. Albert Brodrick was a well-known and respected personality in early Pretoria as well as a spirited poet. His first book of poems "Fifty Fugitive Fancies", published in 1875, has the distinction of being the FIRST volume of poetry published in the Transvaal. He was the owner of the Gaiety Bar, the first bar on Pretoria's church square. At the time he was the only person who managed to get a license to sell wine by the bottle. The famous artist Thomas Baines made a painting of his bar as payment for his groceries debt to Brodrick. The Boers jokingly called him Broodryk, which is a common Dutch/Afrikaans surname which closely resembles Brodrick.
