'In May 1978 South African airmen and soldiers burst over the northern border of South West Africa/Namibia. They attacked three widely separated locations inside the neighbouring country of Angola, destroying a number of bases and killing hundreds of insurgents belonging to the South West Africa People's Organisation (Swapo).

These attacks, part of an operation code-named Reindeer, inaugurated a new South African government policy of launching attacks into neighbouring territories which harboured insurgents planning to infiltrate South Africa or South West Africa/Namibia.

The purpose of Borderstrike is to give a reasonably accurate account of at least some of these operations, written by a journalist who has himself done part of his military service in the operational area.' - editor's note
